Jazz hands in full effect…
As for the ‘costume’ it’s from one of my recitals from 35 years ago. So if you are wondering, yes I am a packrat. I was trying to organize my craft closet when I saw the neon hot pink ensemble and had to share it with you guys!

The past few weeks have been really great…Spring has sprung in the Bay Area. It caught me by surprise. I was just feeling the blah ness of Winter in full effect when I woke up to sunshine and a bird orgy outside my window. Literally hundreds of robins, larks and finches in one tree having a blast! So if that’s not a sign of spring in suburbia I don’t know nothing!

My winter garden keeps producing, there’s enough kale to feed the dachshunds, in laws and us, along with the beets and carrots ready to be pulled, although I am secretly treasuring their snugness in the soil.

I started my seeds a couple of weeks ago. This year I will only grow limited amounts of veggies as I typically go overboard by wanting 15 types of heirloom tomatoes and overcrowding prevents me from enjoying the bounty. I will plant tomatillos, 3 types of organic, heirlooms, zukes and 2 types of cucumbers.

I am still bent on building a chicken coop and raising some chicks for eggs and companionship.
I came across a great sounding pickled egg recipe for Bantham eggs the other day. Bantham chickens are a bit smaller and their eggs are perfectly single sized.

My IBS has been controlled the past two weeks and I haven’t had much upset. I really have been eating only at home with clean simple tasty meals.
While I still have cravings of bread, crackers etc. I know eating any thing with gluten just is not worth the gut ache. I continue to make pots of homemade broth weekly. That seems to anchor my diet and makes me feel normal.
Last weekend I ran the Oakland Team Relay. The weather was perfect, I ran the hardest part of the marathon, uphill for 5 miles, and sustained my energy throughout. I even ran an extra 2 miles afterward! I was so careful and mindful the entire week before about what I was putting in my body. Such diligence really paid off as I ran my best pace ever!
Here’s a pic of me with my newest addition to my medal collection!

So life is going, which is a good thing!
Happy Spring everyone!

Humdinger of a Day or Happy Last Day of Winter

20130319-220756.jpg
Howie left ,Joey right

I was looking forward to my day off. My husband and I planned on getting chores done and preparing for our sons visit back home next week for Spring Break. Today began with a serious of routine doctors appointments. I had not had an annual in a few years and my husband had to follow up on his vaccinations for his new job. After my appointment I met my husband in the waiting room who surprisingly was being taken care of by two nurses checking his vitals and serving him apple juice. After being poked he stood up, felt light headed and almost blacked out. After two hours of being monitored by nurses and his doctor he was released since he felt a bit better. I drove home and we were greeted by our 2 darling dachshunds Joey and Howie. Well actually one was sick as a dog. There were piles of vomit everywhere. Once we realized which one it was, we cleaned up the mess and took Joey outside for some fresh air. He continued to get sick from both ends. This alarmed us because Joey has had some health issues and been on medicine for an autoimmune disease the past year. He was lethargic. Not his chipper self.
The disease attacks the good blood cells in the joints causing severe arthritis. We are fortunate that we live close enough to UCDavis who treats Joey for the disease.
We took Joey to the emergency where he was admitted right away. The vet determined it was just a bacteria infection. Phew! No relapse of his autoimmune disease!

We all went back home. I felt exhausted. Do you ever think your day is going to be one way and turns out to be a humdinger? Today definitely was that day.
After 6 hours of various medical attention and advice, there was only one thing that I know would make us feel better. For the dogs, warm rice and for the humans, homemade chicken soup.
Lately with my IBS attacks, I make a big pot of homemade chicken stock to use for our weekly meals. It helps keep my gut happy and healthy.

Gluten Free Chicken Soup

As I relax tonight I am grateful that the day went the way it did. It made me think how life is short. I shouldn’t take my health for granted or my family’s for that matter.

When I checked the mail today I received a package from Juniper Moon Farms. It was my Fall 2012 shares. Perfect timing, on the last day of Winter.

Hip Hip Hooray for Women!

20130310-152242.jpg

Happy International Women’s Day!
I know it was this past Friday. I think women should be celebrated in some way…everyday…let me share with you I went to a event at Square on Friday celebrating women merchants! It was a mini Apple reunion for me as I ran into a few of my girlfriends there! What a great surprise! We all have moved on from Apple, but still keep in touch.

The first ever Square Makers Faire was headed up by my friend Michelle. She is an extraordinary woman who draws, creates and works at start up Square. Square has developed an awesome device that fits into any iPhone or Droid that turns your device into a POS tool. I’ve used it for payment on some of my personal knitted items. It’s convienant, easy to use and they are an awesome local company in San Francisco. You can find out more here.

Although I was feeling fatigued, nauseous and frustrated by my tummy issues I pulled myself out of bed and went to the event. I’m glad I did. The vibe was positive, I met other women artists and realized I too can have my own side business just like all of the ladies who attended.I need to walk the talk and Just do It!
There’s no better time than the present right?

I left the event feeling energized, full of life. And to top off the night, I heard my name being yelled from the underground transit by two of my former friends at TCO. Hugs all around!

The next day was my running day. We took off early and hit the trail by 7a. Here’s where I run…

20130310-153926.jpg
Oddly, running makes me feel alive. It gives me much needed energy to get through my days. I’m grateful I have found one thing that makes me feel better.
My doctor officially diagnosed me with IBS on Friday. You can find out more here. There is no cure, just lifestyle changes are recommended.
One theory to help in tummy issues is to assist good bacteria in your gut. Eating pickled or fermented foods can aid in digestion.
I went to work and tested out my new Perfect Pickler I ordered awhile back.
It pickles food in small batches. I’m anxious to try the sauerkraut I started yesterday!
Waiting 2 weeks will be difficult, meanwhile I’ll eat some pickles I made during summer!

Here’s more about the Perfect Pickler

As usual, my life stays moving forward. I try to make sure at the end of each day to think back and reflect on life’s little lessons that encourage me to follow my passions.
I’m reminded daily…to Just Do It. And you should follow your passions too.
Have a great week!

Reality Checking

This week was a reality check for me. I must figure out my health issues. I experienced extreme mood swings, insomnia, too many bathroom check ins to count and even some crying when on…
My doctor must have accepted a billion new patients in the New Year so getting in to see him is like playing the lottery.
The constant positivity that helped me this week was from my husband Ron and from the Great Outdoors. When I felt my lowest and most frustrated a walk at nearby Lake Chabot seemed to make my worries go away. It’s a man made lake that is a hidden treasure in my opinion. The dam was built around the 1900s. There’s oak, manzanita, eucalyptus and redwood tres nestled within valleys and canyons full of towering California Laurel. It’s heaven to me. Today my husband and I were up early to try a trail run that goes around the 14 mile lake.
We set off and began our adventure. As we hit mile 6 we found ourselves in a new world filled with various kinds of fern, turkey tail mushrooms and blooming columbine. We felt so far removed from the world, surrounded by nature. I felt alive and good.
My husband and I began running half marathons a few years ago. We usually train on road, around city streets. So trying this trail was exciting for us as it was something a little different. The trail was not paved, consisted of dirt and rocks, branches and lots of poison oak. One thing that struck us as different were the attitudes of each trail runner we encountered. Typically, my husband and I always say hello to walkers and runners on our normal routes when we are out. Most people reply back, some look the other way and some pretend they don’t see or hear us.
Today on the trail, the runners were exuberant! Happy to see us and share what a beautiful day it was! This was the experience as we passed every trail runner! It was great! This motivated us to run further and share with other trail runners the enthusiasm we also had for such a beautiful day.
It created a steady stream of goodness for the rest of our run.

Here a a few pictures I took on our run. If you are ever in the Bay Area, check Lake Chabot and other East Bay Parks out. They are seriously good for the soul. 😀
Have a great week!

Cool new shaker!!

20130227-093951.jpg

I’ve been meaning to share with you my new shaker I ordered! It repurposes a Mason Jar into a cocktail shaker! How cool is that?
Once Lent is over I will give it a whirl..I mean shake!
Two guys from the South, who now live in Brooklyn, organized a Kickstarter for their invention. You can read more about it here.

Here is the link to order! Bottoms up! Cheers to the Mason Shaker

Insomniacs Unite! But only from the hours of 1am-4am

So as long as I’ve been a mother, that’s 19 years, I have had bouts of insomnia. It’s actually getting worse as I get older. I used to discuss it with my doctor who just said, ‘Amy you have too many things on your plate. Try to relax, don’t drink coffee after 3pm, when your body needs the sleep, you’ll be the first to know!’
Since the boy, I mean young man, is away at college I hardly have much to do. I work of course, but I have always done that. I have insomnia at least 3x a week now. Tonight’s reason is stomach issues. My reaction to food in general has gotten much worse. I’m beginning to believe the two are related along with my fatigue.
I’m not going to blame all the insomnia on food allergies. I have always been a do-er. I take after my dad in that way. Often he would be up late working at the computer, and up early working too. Both my brothers have bouts of insomnia too. We just don’t need much sleep it seems. I think of it as a fortunate trait. I always did my best work during school in the late night hours.
And luckily for my son, he has acquired the trait too.
Before Facebook, life in the wee hours were lonely. I read, I knitted or just rotisseried in bed waiting for sleep to take over. Now, I have an insomnia community of like minded people sharing thoughts, pictures and tips because we get it. We laugh at each others stories, read up on breaking news etc…
It also gives me time to knit. I am still in my Do Something for 30 Days challenge. It’s coming along nicely. I’ll share more in that project later.
I better get to bed before the sun comes up…I’ve got to work in a few hours.
Have a great week, day or night!

Not counting days but it’s a start

20130219-065138.jpg
As I shared previously I set out a goal to do something for 30 days. I was inspired by Matt Cutts and his TEDtalk. I admit I have been in a rutt, knitting small stuff that takes no real commitment other than to sit down and knit straight for 2 hours and voila a hat is finished.
So after lurking through TED one night I got inspired. And when you get Inspired about something, magic happens, you then begin to DO something and then after that the Motivation kicks in! So here I am, maybe a week into it and what you see is the bottom. Knowing that when you knit stockinette the edge rolls up, I changed color to create a surprise, added a couple rolls of ribbing then onto the intarsia. I’m definitely excited the way it’s turning out. The body of the sweater seems mammoth to me, I hope it goes by fast as my attention span wanes on monotonous types of knitting. Enough about that, I’m sneaking some stitches in before I get ready for work.
Cheers to Just Doing It! Hip hip hooray!

February is Fabulous

First, has anyone ever had a dog that absolutely loved kale? As you see here, my 2 doxies are extremely anxious to get these greens…licked lips and the stares! Crazy pups!

I have been knitting…not as focused as I would like but have been knitting. On a recent TEDtalk I viewed the other day Matt Cutts talks about doing something for 30 days. It could be anything…but the end result will be something learned, happiness and motivation will result…interesting talk and here’s the linkTry Something For 30 Days

I would love to knit an Icelandic sweater or lopapeysa. See here from Wikipedia…

I’ve been eyeing them all over ravelry. The use of colors and patterns strike awe and delight when I catch someone wearing one. So for 30 days I will work on my lopi sweater. If I miss a stitch I will rip out until perfect. I have a bad habit of knitting as I go, however it turns out should be fine. However, since following a pattern with various bobbins of yarn throughout the pattern must be followed to arrive at the final result…So here I go…lets lopi!

When the going gets tough the tough gets cooking…

I heard on the radio today that the third Monday in January is called Blue Mondayhttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2265639/Most-depressing-day-year-Feeling-Blame-Blue-Monday-2013.html. Often people are low because the holidays are past. Resolutions have been made and not being practiced…etc…So if you are feeling a little low today it’s alright, everyone knows… It will be better tomorrow.

Here’s a sweet little posy I picked from my yard today…

20130121-222700.jpg

I did some gardening today. We are getting ready to add lavender and white sage to our plot. My husband dug out a narly root. The sun was out, the dogs mowed down the kale patch. Yes my dogs love kale and arugula! Crazy dachshunds!

I admit I was felling a little blue at times today but cooking really changes my mental state. Maybe it’s the act of creating something nourishing. The smells from browning sausage permeate throughout the house…mmm…I follow a great blog called Tartlette.
Being gluten free, I do need to be careful following some recipes, however Tarlette is great inspiration to me. And I make recipes up too. There are sweet and savory recipes on Tartlette. Check it out. I’m making Ratatouille tonight.
Heres the recipehttp://www.tarteletteblog.com/2009/03/recipe-ratatouille-in-kitchen-with-mom.html?m=1

Over gluten free penne, it’s divine!
Also on the back burner , literally is a sausage, mushroom, pesto sauce which I’ll serve over penne as well, that I just made up, I used my favorite prepared pesto. Here’s how it’s done…
Brown 1 lb Italian sausage, I used hot
Drain fat, sauté sliced mushrooms, 1cup
Boil and drain 1lb pasta
Combine pesto, mushrooms and sausage. Sprinkle cheese if you want.
Eat up!

Have a great week friends!
My pups felt a little blue too today:-)
